The Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and Choir is deeply saddened by the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Over many years the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and Choir has been honoured to have had the opportunity to perform on numerous occasions for The Duke of Edinburgh.

His Royal Highness always took a great deal of interest in engaging with all the instrumentalists and singers of the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and Choir and he made a long-lasting impression on them all.

Amongst the very many performances, two particularly special occasions were:

On Friday 20th July 2012, in the Diamond Jubilee Year of Her Majesty The Queen, Head of The Commonwealth, the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and Choir was invited by The Duke of Edinburgh to perform at an historic event held at Windsor Castle to mark and celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award World Fellowship.

In June 2017, Sally Shebe, Director-General of Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and Choir, and Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Roberts MBE, at the time the Senior Director of Music, of the Household Division, presented to His Royal Highness, a recorded Musical Tribute “Dedicated to His Royal Highness The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh and Lord High Admiral on the occasion of the Sapphire Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen”.

The title composition, “Jack - A Local Hero”, composed by Commonwealth Music Composer-in-Residence and Artistic Director Paul Carroll, with words by Dr Grahame Davies, is dedicated to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and it was recorded by the Commonwealth Children’s Choir with the State Ceremonial Musicians of the Household Division.

Also included on this recording is the Sapphire Jubilee Suite of Marches - Windsor, Balmoral, Caernarfon and Hillsborough, composed by Paul Carroll, which is dedicated to Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of Her Majesty’s Sapphire Jubilee.

On 20 November 2017 the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and Choir presented to The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh a specially created and recorded Windsor Suite – Nine Fantasias for Piano, composed by Paul Carroll : “A Musical Tribute dedicated to Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, to mark and to celebrate the occasion of the Seventieth Anniversary of Their Wedding”.
